A natural col tarn on the col that links Kirk Fell and Great Gable, Beckhead Tarn varies in size according to the weather. If it's been particularly dry the tarn can be completely dried up, unlike the nearby, unnamed, tarn which is deeper and remains full for much longer.
The only access is on foot, the easiest route being the footpath up beside Gable Beck from Wasdale Head. Once at the tarn, fine views can be had of the high fells around and the Ennerdale and Wasdale valleys.
