Little Tarn lies in the Orthwaite Valley to the north of the mountains of Lakeland and is a typical lowland tarn, with reed edges and some thin woodland surrounding it.

There is no access to the lake shore, although a bridleway passes close to the north-western shore. The tarn can also be seen from the road through Orthwaite.
