Woodhow Tarn lies just outside Nether Wasdale. It is in a small hollow in the middle of the Wasdale valley. The shores are crumbly, indicating that it may be the remains of a larger glacial lake. Edged with a few trees, the inflow is a small stream to the north-east.

Access is via a path which leads away from the road either by Woodhouses Farm or half a mile south, both paths loop round and join just to the west of the tarn. It is also visible from the Wasdale Head road, but only if on foot or in a tall vehicle.
