Right in the heart of the Lake District is one of the most beautiful of the lakes, Grasmere. Popular both because of the lake and because Grasmere village (at the head of the lake) was the home, and is the final resting place, of the poet William Wordsworth it can be very busy in the peak tourist season.

It is possible to walk all round Grasmere, using a mixture of footpaths and roads. Most of the northern shores are private so the path deviates onto roads to bypass this area. The south-western shore, however, has a permissive footpath running along close to the shore.
