Greendale Tarn lies in a glaciated valley to the west of Middle Fell, the tarn being held beck by a combination of glaciated moraines and fallen debris from the crags to the south-east. It is fed by two becks and discharges down Greendale Gill to the south. The eastern shore is rocky whilst the western is marshy ground.
