High up to the north of Eskdale, Stony Tarn sits in a rough bowl under Whin Crag. The main inflow is a beck to the north, whilst the outfall is to the west, tumbling down past rocky outcrops. The tarn bottom is covered with sharp-edges stones, giving it its name.
