Situated near Sow How Tarn, on the Cartmell Fells, Middle Tarn is an artificial pond, probably constructed in the 19th century. Very silted and overgrown now, only about half its original size, it is surrounded by rhododendrons and mixed woodland.

A footpath leads north-east from Sow How Tarn into the woodland, then swings south to pass the western edge of Middle Tarn.
