High up on Grasmere Common, Codale is an attractive mountain tarn with a rock island.

It can be accessed via paths up from Grasmere (via Easedale Tarn) or from Great Langdale (via Stickle Tarn), turning off the path between the two tarns at Belles Knott. Alternatively, a path leads down from the summit of Sergeant Man via Lang Crag.

On this first trip I climbed up fom Great Langdale as far as the ridge above the tarns, lack of time precluded going any closer this time.
